Component suites that can form the basis of AppCore (including Open ESB and other proprietary systems like Sun's Java CAPS product) have evolved separately and therefore provide varying levels of support for systemic qualities. For example, JBI components in Open ESB provide strong support for reusability and interoperability due to the fact that they are based on a standard designed to promote these systemic qualities. Sun's Java CAPS components may not provide the same level of interoperability, but they could significantly outperform Open ESB components in terms of serviceability.

Support for a given systemic quality can even vary within a suite. For example, the JBI runtime in Open ESB provides support for creating clusters of JBI instances, but only a subset of the components in Open ESB are capable of running in a cluster.

The goal of defining systemic qualities is to clearly outline what qualities a component must possess to be included as part of AppCore
